IEs4Linux is the simpler way to have Microsoft Internet Explorer running on Linux (or any OS running Wine).
No clicks needed. No boring setup processes. No Wine complications. Just one easy script and you’ll get three IE versions to test your Sites. And it’s free and open source. This may be very helpful for software developers and web developers to test their applications.

IEs4Linux Installation in Ubuntu
You have to enable universe packages first. It is also recommended that you use the official winehq ubuntu package:
Open /etc/apt/sources.list file
$sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Uncomment following lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list and it may be different if you are in different country instead of UK
deb http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper universe
deb-src http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper universe
Add WineHQ APT Repository
or
If you want to add source packages from the repository
Currently, wine only have i386 binary packages available. If you do not use an i386 architecture, or wish to compile the package in a special or optimized way, you can build the wine package using the source repository instead. To do this, add a source repository with one of the following:
deb-src http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt dapper main
Close gedit and run an update to take your new Repository
$sudo apt-get update
Install wine and cabextract
$sudo apt-get install wine cabextract
Now you need to download IEs4Linux script from here
$wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-2.0.3.tar.gz
$tar xzvf ies4linux-2.0.3.tar.gz
$cd ies4linux-2.0.3
Once you are inside ies4linux-2.0.3 directory you need to run the following script to install internet explorer
$./ies4linux
This will install the internet explore in your machine.
To run IE you need to run the following command and it may be different for others this path at the end of installation it will give from where you want to run
$/root/bin/ie6
You should see the Internet explorer opening
Internet Explorer Version and Widows Media Player
[thumb:425:c:l=p]
If you want to see this in action check the following screen
[thumb:423:c:l=p]
If try to run /root/bin/ie6 as root user you will get the following error messages so you need to run as user
#/root/bin/ie6

If you want to check more information about this script check here
I installed it on SuSE 10.1 and it’s working perfectly.
Hi,
I just tried it, and it really worked. I was really surprised, because I had tried three times to get it working, and it never worked.
Now I just ran this script, and I have an IE6 running here. It is a bit scary to have such a weapon of self destruction on your desktop, but I need it for testing ;-(.
Test system: Debian 3.1 “Sarge” stable, with backports from backports.org. Wine version 0.9.15-1~bpo.1. WM: Fvwm 2.5.12-5 on a XFree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1
Anyway, Thanks a lot, good work!
Moritz
thanks for your comments
Ran this on CentOS 4.4, installed cabextract from dag repository, ran the script, worked like a charm. Nice job!
I just followed the instructions on this site and Iget the following error…. (see bottom)
Any idea what is wrong ?

Hi Andy,
I would suggest try to reinstall IEs4linux
First Remove ies4linux, do the following in your home directory or from where you are trying to run ies4linux
rm .ies4linux
rm bin/
After removing ies4linux and now you need to install ies4linux.
hope this helps
I installed it and works fine, but i have a cuestion : in most pages i get a flickering image. like it’s re chargeing the page. is it normal?
thanks.
may be it will happen for the first time and next time when you try to laod it should work properly
I ran the script on SUSE Linux 10 with the latest WINE build and MS IE 6 SP1 was installed and running within 5 minutes!!! Amazing! Many thanks to the ie4linux developers!
I really LOVE you.
Intalled and working without any problem, automagically!
ies4linux works nearly automagically on Fedora Core 3 too. I used yum to install the wine cab extract and the rest was as described. Now I can see what a mess IE makes of properly coded web pages.
Installed on Ubuntu 6.06 without a hitch. I’d love to get AvantBrowser working now. I need access to IE because of a proprietary database that I’m required to use, and the web app only works under IE.
I can install Avantbrowser, but it won’t lauch the IE engine. Does anyone have any idea how to do it?
Thanks,
Dan
Installed it on Ubuntu 6.06, works like a charm.
All I need still is a way to get IE4linux to play Media Player streams. My local TV stations only broadcast on the web in Windows Media Player format. Can’t get that to work in FireFox so am hoping to get it going through IE4linux.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Guus
I installed this and its working. Thank you
Thanks a lot – I hate having to run back and forth between my girlfriend’s windoze computer and the Debain Linux computer I actually do web design on.
I am new to Linux and use Ubuntu, but I get this error when trying to install the things you wrote. ‘Could not mark all packages…..’
Apart from this, it is very difficult to install this for a new user of Linux. Linux is not very user-friendly, so I hope I can continue to use it without having to understand evevything about computers 🙂
But is IEsforLinux accurate? At http://www.plockton.com, I know that the search/go button is on the right of the field in Windows IE6. With IEsforLinux (Edgy Ubuntu) it’s below. If I can’t rrust it to render exactly, what’s the point? (I have MS Core Fonts installed.)
Hi!
Thanks for making ies4linux. I’ll tell my boss to donate some doe 🙂 .
I’ve got a small problem which I was wondering if anyone could help me with. If I try to add favorites IE6 crashes with the following:

Any idea what’s causing this? I’m running ubuntu 6.10.
Excellent, thanks very much!
Works brilliantly
Anyone have success/problems under Mandriva 2007?
Tried to set it, face the problem that the program does not find any valid Internet connection! Internet connection works fine in Ubuntu, but not under wine! Installed several Windows programs that do not need Internet and those work fine. But any attempt to get an upgrade or to access Internet via a wine based program tells me that I have no Internet connection. How to enable Wine to allow Internet connection?
Any advise welcome.
I needed to reinstall Wine fresh and clean. Then I installed ies4linux as separate user and it works extreme well now. Thx
Just used your script to use IE on Ubuntu for some website testing.
Worked great first time – many thanks!
Installed it, but I am having a small problem. I need IE for one website, which requires IE, and Java to run. When I run IE (using Ubuntu 6.06), and log into the webisite I need to use, it keeps trying to install JRE 1.4.2_12. If I let it, it seems to complete, then just sits there. Am I missing something? If this is a dumb question, I am very new to linux, having converted only about 2 weeks ago.
Installed IE6 on Suse 10.2 within few time.
Great stuff, works perfectly BUT:
Font support is messy, font’s to big, font weight not precise…
There my question:
Is it the interpretation of the IE which is failing, or the missing windows fonts on Linux?
All in all… great stuff guys. Thanks for this one!
Your work was great!
Hi,
I am having a problem trying to install ubuntu linux on my Windows 98 laptop. First I get a screen that says:
No Eithernet Card Detected, but a FireWire Interface is present. It’s possible, though unlikely, that with the right FireWire hardware connected to it, this could be your primary Eithernet interface. Do you intend to use FireWire Ethernet? YES/NO
Then, regardless of if I choose YES or No, I get this error:
! Confifure the Network
No Netword Interfaces Detected
No netword interfaces were found. The installation system was unable to find a network device.
You may need to load a specific module for your network interface card if you have one. For this go back to the network hardware detection step. GO BACK/CONTINUE
If I go back I get the same errors all over again. If I continue the computer tries to start up the partitioner and gets stuck at 52%
HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You!
You’ve just saved me a huge amount of time and likely headaches. I run ubuntu, but have to work with Microsoft and most (if not all) their sites require IE. I’ve been looking a virtual machines to get the pre-existing xp partition that came on the machine running as a virtual guest, but was having problems. The only thing I really needed was IE, so this is absolutely perfect. Thanks very much for this!
This error that occurred:
/usr/bin/wineprefixcreate: line 174: wineserver: command not found
Your wine does not have wineprefixcreate installed. Maybe you are running an old Wine version. Try to update it to the latest version.
How resolve?
I would suggest try to reinstall IEs4linux

rm .ies4linux

After removing ies4linux and now you need to install ies4linux.

Hello,
I’ve got some issues to install ies4linux.
Error is (in french) :
“An error is arrived during the downloading. Restart IEs4Linux. File corrupted : ie6/FR/FONTCORE.CAB”
Do you know where is it come from ?
Thank you
I’ve got Debian Lenny.
What are the other two IE version inside the script?
