Ubuntu Multimedia Center is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with community and professional support. It is also a live cd that is ubuntu derived and also free. This system was inspired by the fact that ubuntu didn’t have much of a multimedia center.Because users would have to manually download the codecs for playing mp3’s and what not.The mail objective of this project is multimedia related programs available to users as easy as possible.

Hi There ubuntu multimedia center fans. I guess you might have already guess that my site is down but I need your help now. Since 100gb of bandwidth didn’t hold out as I expected (as I thought it would… foolish of me to think that) so now I am at an end where I might not be able to continue unless I got more bandwidth or get a mirror. if anybody can help me email me at thibeaz[at]gmail[dot]com

  2. shinmai Says:

I don’t feel this really qualifies as a “Multimedia Center”. It looks to be pretty much ubuntu with some changes in the default packages. What a shame…

  3. dlai Says:

I totally agree with shinmai, I was hoping to see a full setup of mythtv

  4. Admin Says:

    @shinmai

currently this is under development and the version i have shown here is RC1 and the author is going to be released RC2 with Mythtv and other things in RC2 version

  5. Alan Brady Says:

Maybe next time the release can be put somewhere and put up via torrent. I’d be happy to put it out as a torrent. I don’t have very great upload bandwidth, though But if it can be toreented (is that a word?) it wouldn’t take too long to get it spread around. And it would take a lot of pressure off site bandwidth.

As for other comments, I’ll withhold judgement until I can actually try it. But I’d tend to be a little more forgivving of a project that’s still in its early stages.

  6. Zach Thibeau Says:

As I said in other sites that this is just a proof-of-concept, basically for my part. I will in RC2 as the admin says have mythtv set but I’ll have to strip some other stuff like removing a couple of items like the games. Ohh don’t worry I am going to include a custom script for adding the games afterwards the OS is installed. But all that within 600 or so megs can be pretty hard. But in light there will be a new theme (actually the original theme that I forgot to add in RC1…Was working late at night when I built RC1) and some extra features that other users requested.

  7. Ed Finkler Says:

Not to pick on you too much, but do you know what a “Release Candidate” is? You might check out:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_stage

I’d reconsider calling these RCs. From what you’ve said, they’re by no means feature complete. A “proof of concept” sounds at best like an alpha release.

  8. TomTom Says:

Hey guys lets not discourage. I do hope you continue and build something with mythtv built in from the start. It would be a great feature.

  9. Zach Thibeau Says:

Well I use my own way of naming development names. Sorry if it confuses anyone I will use the standard naming ;) by the way my mirror is almost set up. my main page is now running but the iso file is still uploading so I suggest waiting until it is ready. I will post the link when it is ready

  10. paul Says:

have all the legal issue been solved? afaik, codecs are not bundled in the official release due to some legality issues. we just have to download and install the codec personally. but it’s good to hear that there is a release like this. :)

  11. warren hixson Says:

will this go onto a compac 1750?

  12. Zach Thibeau Says:

I believe it should. What kind of proccessor do you have, a 32bit or a 64bit? Because I haven’t Branched out to 64 yet

  13. me Says:

    does it have bmpx ?

  14. Steven Says:

Is there an alternative download site?
That one has exceeded its bandwidth for quite some time now :[

  15. Admin Says:

Download link available if you check the download link in the article.

  16. Zach Thibeau Says:

Forum is up too. multimedia.debianadmin.com. Just click on the forum link and you’ll be taken to the forum

  17. Kid Says:

    I haven’t been able to access multimedia.debianadmin.com
    Is it up yet?

  18. Zach Thibeau Says:

I don’t know what happened. I remember in an email the the bandwidth was getting a little low. I just got another person willing to mirror so I’ll let you guys know when it’s up.

  19. Zach Thibeau Says:

New site launched http://www.ubuntummc.com. Yup folks thats Ubuntumc’s new site and we are still uploading some stuff but we are almost done. Keep listening for more on Ubuntu Multimedia Center News

  20. Frank Says:

will this install over an existing edgy installation?

  21. Zach Thibeau Says:

No it won’t but what I am trying to do is create a convert-me-script for current users of Dapper/edgy to have multimedia center. PS UBUNTU MULTIMEDIA CENTER IS NOW UP (except for the iso fixing that now)

  22. Zach Thibeau Says:

    Firefox can’t find server @ “multimedia.debianadmin.com”

  24. Zach Thibeau Says:

You need to go to http://ubuntummc.com

  25. Arthur Says:

Good idea, but don’t overstretch. Keep it simple and working. Á lot of people have a hard time to install Mythtv. Only solution is knoppmyth, but then you dont have the nice ubuntu distribution. If you could make a distribution which:
    - included mythtv
    - includes a lot of codec
    - supports hardware

If you could get 2 out of those 3, you will have done a great job.

  26. Brent Roos Says:

Hmm, check it out. It appears that my GDM theme, which I call Blubuntu, made it into a distro.

  27. Brian Harkness Says:

I am hoping that whatever codecs are legal to distribute to a mahjority of the world are just included. Installing extra codecs was even a challenge for me and never could get some stuff to work. I could finally get AAC to work in Amarok with Kubuntu Edgy, and never could get it in Dapper without “breaking” a package. Hoping it won’t be so hard in future editions. Fortunatley if one is willing to look, someone usually posts the code that can be copied and pasted into a shell to get them.

  28. Brent Says:

Multimedia and hardware detection/drivers is the largest drawback to Linux on the desktop. The solution is going to have to be more companies adhering to the demand for Linux support. This is going to require corporate sponsorship, which is where companies like Red Hat, Novell, and Linspire will come in with cash $$$. Community will only take this so far. Vendors need a reason to make drivers and applications for Linux.

    Money talks and B.S. walks.

By the way, my Blubuntu GDM theme is nice huh? Some credit or a link might be nice, you know?

  30. Андрей Says:

    Привет всем!
Нашёл отличный вариант, для своего мини Медиа Центра, это Ubuntu Multimedia Center!!!

    С уважением Андрей ;-)

  31. Zach Thibeau Says:

Brent you theme is just only a temporary gdm I am currently working on one that is completly original so that everybody is happy and I will make sure that you’ll get your credit you deserve

  32. Brent Says:

I did not mean to say that you cannot use it. Please do! I am honored by it. I was only messing around, and pointing out my design.

But I am glad that you confirm this.

Personally, I think your modification looks great! You should use it dude. Besides, I’d love for my work to be included in a distro!

  33. mx Says:

Hi! Everything is OK! But I can not install modem. Please, explain to me what must I do in order to install: 1) dial-up modem, 2) ADSL modem, and get Internet connection. Best regard!

  34. Allan Says:

It’s good that they came up with a multimedia-themed Ubuntu distro-in-distro. I really love the regular Ubuntu. IMHO, it is one of the easiest distros for a windows n00b. But when I got my ATI HDTV Wonder card, I had such a hard time installing and configuring it with MythTV. In the end, I just got the live-on-CD version on MythTV and used that instead. Hopefully the Ubuntu Multimedia Center will prove a better match. Thanks for the installation walkthrough!

    Allan

hay que tener cuidado con esta “distribución”. Para más detaller ver esta liga que fue escrita en la Facultad de Ciencias UNAM

  36. Buzz Says:

When installing UMC, is there any way to tell it where to install GRUB, or to use LILO instead of GRUB?

When I install UMC, it writes GRUB to the MBR on my first drive. I would like it to install GRUB or LILO to the same partition
that UMC is installed to. I can do this with Ubuntu 6.10, but didn’t see the option in Multimedia Center.

  37. Odin / Velmont Says:

    Wtf is ChurchForge?

  38. Arthur Says:

What’s the difference between Ubuntu and Ubuntu MMC (apart from the name and startup screen?

  39. Real Says:

this is first time i installed ubuntu at my PC…

i really surprised that it tooks only 20minnts to instsalled my pC. save more time from windows.

when i start pc and also shutdown it takes few momnets only when windows took more time…

i am really surprised and thanks to those who try to develop it day by day.

hope within few years an operating system will be found in variuos dust box which is must windows

as a first time user i am failure to run my mp3 and others vedio file.
is there any one who explain me or send a link to me for this problem…
