For those seeking a MythTV ubuntu setup, go to www.ubuntu.com and look for Mythbuntu.

There's already a flavour of Ubuntu that caters to MythTV heads ;)

When installing UMC, is there any way to tell it where to install GRUB, or to use LILO instead of GRUB?

When I install UMC, it writes GRUB to the MBR on my first drive. I would like it to install GRUB or LILO to the same partition
that UMC is installed to. I can do this with Ubuntu 6.10, but didn't see the option in Multimedia Center.

It's good that they came up with a multimedia-themed Ubuntu distro-in-distro. I really love the regular Ubuntu. IMHO, it is one of the easiest distros for a windows n00b. But when I got my ATI HDTV Wonder card, I had such a hard time installing and configuring it with MythTV. In the end, I just got the live-on-CD version on MythTV and used that instead. Hopefully the Ubuntu Multimedia Center will prove a better match. Thanks for the installation walkthrough!

I did not mean to say that you cannot use it. Please do! I am honored by it. I was only messing around, and pointing out my design.

But I am glad that you confirm this.

Personally, I think your modification looks great! You should use it dude. Besides, I'd love for my work to be included in a distro!

Multimedia and hardware detection/drivers is the largest drawback to Linux on the desktop. The solution is going to have to be more companies adhering to the demand for Linux support. This is going to require corporate sponsorship, which is where companies like Red Hat, Novell, and Linspire will come in with cash $$$. Community will only take this so far. Vendors need a reason to make drivers and applications for Linux.

Money talks and B.S. walks.

By the way, my Blubuntu GDM theme is nice huh? Some credit or a link might be nice, you know?

I am hoping that whatever codecs are legal to distribute to a mahjority of the world are just included. Installing extra codecs was even a challenge for me and never could get some stuff to work. I could finally get AAC to work in Amarok with Kubuntu Edgy, and never could get it in Dapper without "breaking" a package. Hoping it won't be so hard in future editions. Fortunatley if one is willing to look, someone usually posts the code that can be copied and pasted into a shell to get them.

Good idea, but don't overstretch. Keep it simple and working. Á lot of people have a hard time to install Mythtv. Only solution is knoppmyth, but then you dont have the nice ubuntu distribution. If you could make a distribution which:
- included mythtv
- includes a lot of codec
- supports hardware

If you could get 2 out of those 3, you will have done a great job.
