Comments on: Install libdvdcss and w32 video codecs in Debian and ubuntu

I agree with Michael [27]. I was so pleased to get rid of Windows XP after I installed Ubuntu 9.04, everything seemed to be so fast, clean and sharp. Then I tried to watch BBC News 24 live and the problems started. I used the Ubuntu forum for help and by chance I got the streaming problem solved. But I can’t play any of my videos on Ubuntu. I’ve spent around 20 hours over 3 days looking for solutions. Can’t find any. This is my last ditch to correct the problem.

sorry , i`m a total noob as i worked 20 years with windows systems , and i dont understand a word you are talking about , i tryed my best to fill in every command from here , but non of them seems to do anything
cant find any packages, the more i look the less i get , seems i can only get 57 packeges at all, i`m running …runnig is the wrong word
kubuntu 9.04 ..and if thats the best linux can do then i wonder why windows is still marked leader , as i`m now at a point to beg for a company thats giving me a programm thats working even if i have to pay for it
i simply want to watch my dvd`s on my computer , what is so difficult
i own the dvd`s , i bought the dvd drive (it came even with nero)
so under a microsoft product even win 95 i could easy watch a dvd
but not under kubuntu
so if none of you can give me a solution
i have to bin kubuntu and install windows vista again

Repositories not found after update ergo timed-out. Does any one know any repositories that have w32codec and libdvdcss2?

i got same problem as –(18.shyam bhavsar)– i have ubuntu 8.04 cant play dvd movies (i tred mplayer,totem player,vlc,dragon player etc..)
desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install w32codecs libdvdcss2

I downloaded “libdvdcss2-dev_1.2.9-1_i386.deb” and ran GDebi Package Installer. Got the error message: Dependency is not satisfiable: libdvdcss2. Can anyone tel me what that means. I bought this computer already with Ubuntu Gutsy on it with a dvd player. I’m really new to Linux so am having all kinds of problems. LOL

Also when I used the Synaptic Package Manager to install gxine, I didn’t get libdvdplay.so. Trying to find this file also. Got the error message when I put the dvd in and gxine came up. When I download a file I put it in my documents folder, but when I run the terminal for a lib, it tells me there is no such file or directory. So where are you supposed to download the file for the terminal to find it.

I would appreciate any help that I can get.

i got a problem, my ubuntu version is actually runnign perfect ex pect totem video player, its need lildvdcss2 file, the thing is that in synaptic, i dont find it, can anyone help??

it seems that libdvdcss2 and w32codecs have disapeared. one week ago I managed to install them, an today, I’m doing it on another computer, and it doesn’t work, I get this comment:

Aucune version du paquet libdvdcss2 n’est disponible, mais il existe dans la base
de données. Cela signifie en général que le paquet est manquant, qu’il est devenu obsolète

which means that it is registered in the database, but not available anymore.
Is there another way I could get these packages?

Yes! Freecontrib.org is definately having “issues” but the previous “wget” scripts and/or additions to the “repositories” for “basic” debian seem to work “fine” for me..just REMOVE the # mark in front of wget and PASTE it into your terminal window and..”viola”! You may have to preceed the the comand with sudo!! Either way it just..”WORKS”! I’m currently running BeaFX (dapper) on an “old” emachines, Intel 440BX chipset, 256Mb.ram! “GREAT”!!

I am getting soo damn angry with all the links failing leaving me unable to use firefox to view embedded non-downloadable media.
