Hi, please anybody who can help me..I have a problem login on my debian etch, before it was working. What happen is I did something is login configuration to allow remote controllers to access my debian without entering the password on it. When i reboot I can’t login on my gui anymore only i can see the mouse cursor which is X.

If you install debian sarge server from minimal install cd you will get only terminal if you want to install GUI you have to install gnome,kde,xfce etc

i have another problem too
is debian just text?
because when i finnished the installation it goes to terminal
and i dont know any thing about that. i needed sothing else like grapichal desktop . its not booting to that linux debian

first you need to install any gui for your debian system like gnome,kde,xfce etc then you can login in to graphical mode

OK i cant get into that graphical mode i dont know but i think the code that you wrote there is wrong
whe i get to the fistrs step it doesnt want to boot with that installgui

Ben Adams,
the installer is as flexible as the ncurse is, because it is just a different frontend. So many of your questions, like can I use LILO, can I use other than DHCP, are all acessible if you choose the back button, which leads you to the installer main menu, and gives those and a lot more other options.

I installed Etch on a Dell C610 laptop with no major issues. However I never got the wireless
to work nor BibleTime. Both worked fine under Sarge 3.1r3 which I’m going back to.

I am preparing to get the installer, and from what I see here, I do have some questions:

I would like a minimal installation, I do not see a lilo alternative, since I prefer lilo over grub.

Is there a way to avoid installing any desktop and using plain X with my own choice of window manager?

How about installing the video driver? It is automatically read/installed by Etch installer?

I see the installer assumes a DHCP connection, is there an alternative setting when DHCP is not detected?

Will ssh be enabled and ran from the start, if so, is there any defense against dictionary attacks or we have to install and setup software that would take care of this?

What is the default kernel version that will be installed? Is there any option on kernel versions like Sarge installer had?

Since the newest PC Hard Drives are most using SATA today, is Etch going to have a problem with that?

Can we see snapshots of a non-graphical Etch installer?

Unfortunately installation on my pc ends with ‘installation step failed’ on ‘uw-imapd’ configurning’, with ‘Failing step is Select and install software’…that was on instalgui, and i’ve tried installing all software pckages except fot laptop& sql database, then just dektop, then everything else except laptop sql db and dasktop, then just standard system on its own…and it always fails on the same step, without any explanation at all no error numbers or links

i’ll try non graphic install maybe that’ll help

GRUB fails to install; had to go with LILO, then install GRUB manually. I agree with Admin’s post #6 -- how about providing choices for GNOME, KDE, and XFCE, *and allowing users to select any-or-all of them*? My preference is none of them, but I would like a choice for minimal X11 installation; i.e., Xorg, X11 apps/libs, so that I can run MY choice of window manager (no desktop managers, thank you very much). Other than the GRUB problem, the install went smoothly; certainly as good as anything Fedora has to offer with its GUI-based installer (and I’ve been using RedHat since 1996).
