There are times debian or ubuntu users and admins want to find which version of debian and ubuntu linux version is running on their machines.This is very useful for those who is helping their customers and they want to know which version they are running and if you took over new system admin job you want to know which version is running on your servers or desktops.

forgot root password or reset root password in Debian

There are times for system administrators they might have forgot their debian machine root password and they want to reset this password.We will see the available options.

There are various methods available for resetting a root password.

Boot debian linux into single-user mode
Boot using a boot disk (like knoppix,gnoppix) and edit the password file
Mount the drive on another computer and edit the password file

Install Mplayer in Ubuntu Linux

MPlayer is a movie and animation player that supports a wide range of codecs and file formats, including MPEG 1/2/4,DivX 3/4/5, Windows Media 7/8/9, RealAudio/Video up to 9, Quicktime 5/6, and Vivo 1/2. It has many MX/SSE(2)/3Dnow(Ex) optimized native audio and video codecs, but allows using XAnim’s and RealPlayer’s binary codec plugins, and Win32 codec DLLs. It has basic VCD/DVD playback functionality, including DVD subtitles, but supports many text-based subtitle formats too. For video output, nearly every existing interface is supported. It’s also able to convert any supported files to raw/divx/mpeg4 AVI (pcm/mp3 audio), and even video grabbing from V4L devices.

Install libdvdcss and w32 video codecs in Debian and ubuntu

w32codecs this is a package of codecs needed to play multiple formats, notably DivX. (disponible. Maintainer: MirSPCM)

libdvdcss is a highly portable library for accessing and unscrambling DVDs encrypted with the CSS system. It is part of the VideoLAN project and is used by VLC and all other open source DVD players such as Ogle, xine-based players and MPlayer.

Enable and Disable Ubuntu Root Password

Ubuntu is one of the few Linux distributions out there that will not enable the root account.If you want to do something with root permission on the console you have to type sudo before the command.

Check your Linux Machine Disk Space Using Discus

Discus is a GPL text-mode disk space usage program.Discus aims to make df prettier. Features include color, bar graphs, and smart formatting of numbers (automatically choosing the most suitable size from kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, or terabytes). Or choose your own size, along with specifying the number of decimal places.

Linux Ethernet Bonding Configuration

Ethernet bonding refers to aggregating multiple ethernet channels together to form a single channel. This is primarily used for redundancy in ethernet paths or for load balancing. This page refers in particular to performing ethernet bonding under linux, and so does not limit itself to discussion of 802.3ad Trunk Aggregation.
